Book Review: The Culture Map by Erin Meyer
I recently finished reading The Culture Map by Erin Meyer, and the experience turned out to be quite different from my expectations. While I was already aware of some cultural differences due to my own travels and collaborations with diverse teams across the globe, Meyer’s insights gave me a much deeper understanding of how and why people from different cultures behave the way they do in professional settings.
Meyer confirms many of the assumptions I’ve held about cultural differences, such as how people conduct meetings, give feedback, or manage disagreements. However, the book also shed light on many nuances I had previously overlooked. For example, Meyer’s explanation of why certain cultures avoid direct confrontation or why others are comfortable with open disagreement helped me contextualise past interactions in a new light.
Throughout the book, Meyer draws on her wealth of experiences, offering relatable anecdotes that resonate with anyone who has worked internationally. Her framework not only validates what many of us have encountered in our professional lives but also offers a lens through which these experiences gain deeper meaning. For instance, Meyer describes how feedback is given across cultures, noting that in countries like the Netherlands, feedback tends to be frank and direct, whereas in Japan, it is often indirect and wrapped in layers of subtlety. These are critical distinctions to grasp, particularly in our increasingly globalised world.
In today’s work environment, where remote work and cross-border teams have become the norm, understanding how different cultures approach conflict, feedback, and collaboration is essential. Meyer’s book provides an essential toolkit for navigating these differences. As she poignantly states, “When it comes to working with people from other cultures, you can never assume that what you mean is what they understand.”
The Culture Map is an accessible and engaging read, but it also delivers its lessons with clarity and precision. It’s a must-read for anyone who works with diverse teams, providing a solid foundation for becoming more culturally fluent and adaptable.
