Let’s start by Defining the Circle of Control

The Circle of Control is a mental framework that helps us identify and distinguish between things we have control over and those we don’t. It is a tool that encourages us to shift our focus and energy towards the aspects of life that are within our influence, rather than wasting resources on things beyond our reach. The concept is often associated with the Stoic philosophy, which teaches individuals to focus on what they can control and accept what they cannot.

Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher, wrote extensively about the distinction between the things we can control and the things we cannot.

You have power over your mind,

not outside events.

Realise this,

and you will find strength.

Marcus Aurelius

Understanding the Circle

The Circle of Control consists of two main areas: the “Inner Circle” and the “Outer Circle.” Other variants include yet another “middle circle” to contain things that we could be aware of and potentially influence but not necessarily things we can control.

  • Inner Circle The Inner Circle represents elements that are within our control. These include our thoughts, attitudes, beliefs, choices, actions, and responses to different situations. It is the sphere where we can exert direct influence and make meaningful changes. By acknowledging and embracing our ability to control these aspects, we can shape our lives in a positive and proactive manner.

  • Middle Circle The Middle Circle is optional but it will give you an idea if whether there are things that you cannot control but in various ways you can still influence. This comes in handy in situations where you are part of a group, a team which you may not be leading so you might have the ability to influence certain decisions but you may not have the full autonomy to make the call.

  • Outer Circle The Outer Circle encompasses factors that are beyond our control. This includes external events, the actions of others, natural disasters, global circumstances, and other variables that are outside of our direct influence. While these factors may impact our lives, it is important to recognize that we cannot change or control them. Thus, investing excessive time and energy into worrying about them is counterproductive.
